In the Imperial era, however,co-emperors became something recurrent as the empire approached its decline.

Thisperiod in Roman historyis known as the “Year of the Five Emperors.”

His political rival, Pescennius Niger, claimed himself emperor after that, and a civil war ensued.

to make it dedicate his full attention to the war, Severus made Clodius Albinus his co-emperor.

Five emperors in one year, very stable.

The reality of their rule was much different, however.

The Roman Empire would eventually be divided, but it wouldn’t be for another century.

However, the reality is that Geta’s death was even more tragic than in the movie.

It was the only way he could see Geta without their own guards.

Instead,Caracalla fought most of his wars against the Parthian Empire, in modern-day Turkey.

Macrinus succeeded Caracalla in 217 AD.

For a little more than a year, he ruled with his son, Diadumenian, as co-emperor.

On the political side of things, at least,the movie efficiently adapts history to its narrative needs.
