How long have you known when the end would be?

Are you aware of the plan for the end yet?

You never know whats gonna happen on a show.

You never know what the chemistry set is gonna deliver.

In this case, it was such a big cast and crew.

Its a big show.

The Boys is a drama series that explores the darker aspects of superhero culture, portraying a world where superheroes abuse their powers rather than use them for good. Centered around a vigilante group aiming to control these corrupt heroes, the series delves into themes of power, corruption, and accountability. The show features a complex narrative with multifaceted characters, offering an unfiltered look at the consequences of unchecked power.

The production is a beast.

You never know where thats gonna lead.

You dont know if the show is gonna be successful, or if its not.

We could have gone three seasons.

You sign on for six years or five years, or whatever, but its a lottery.

Yes, he said that from the word go.

I didnt read into it too much.

Now, it feels more real.

Thats in the mind of the evil genius, crazy genius boss.

Im not even gonna make a run at anticipate that because every time I do, Im wrong.

I didn’t hate myself."

STARR: The surface value of the character is one thing.

Its a fun bad guy to play.

Its very obviously fun and wild and wacky and psychotic, and all that.

Weve always been conscious of making him three-dimensional, and not making him mustache-twirling.

This season we got to go really deep.

We had some really deep, dark Homelander storylines, and I was excited for people to see that.

Im proud of what we did, and Im proud of the character, as well.

STARR: Its interesting because I think it shifts gears this season.

Yes, I think there is a love for the boy, for his son.

On sports fields, theres chronic over coaching from parents.

Maybe Ryans an antidote to that again.

Again, wheres the line between himself and the kid?

But I think there are moments.

The Boys

It poses the question, what is his legacy?

What is his life about?

Where is he at?

Where has he been?

Where is he going?

And the future is Ryan.

His future is gonna be played out through Ryan.

I dont wanna call it crisis.

Lets say midlife reflective space or phase.

Its a really interesting season digging around in that world.

Yeah, he loves the kid.

Its always a balancing act, and its never even.

Someone needs to take responsibility for this character’s greatly uncomfortable superpower.

What was it like to shoot that?

How was that done?

Was any of that practical?

Was it a combination of things to pull that off?

That was pretty gnarly.

STARR: Yeah, it was.

That was really interesting because were always pressed for time on this shoot.

This show is a beast and we move pretty quickly.

I know we were pretty pressed.

First of all, what a hilarious character Webweaver is.

It took a few times to get that.

There were magnets involved and resetting and practical blood explosions.

The end result is fantastic, but often, its quite painful to shoot because its so technical.

Every detail has to be just right.

I dont wanna say its laborious, but its slow going, painstaking work.

Its a little nerve-wracking because youve gotta get that exactly right.

Im always nervous about those things because I wanna do my part right.

I love seeing what we do on the day, and then seeing the end result.

That was pretty gruesome, buttheres something perversely entertaining about the gore in this show.

Its disgusting and horrible and all things wrong, but somehow, its a little satisfying.

When you see how the sausage is made, it takes a different form.

Its impossible for me to watch this show as a punter.

Im always gonna be on the inside track behind the curtain, and thats fine.

I actually far prefer not to watch myself, so Im fine with that.

Its way better for me not to see myself and judge me harshly.

What do you hope that means for next season?

I feel like theres more ground to cover there.

And selfishly, I just really like Jensen.

He fit in like peas and carrots, and Forrest and Jenny, when he came on board.

Hes a great guy to work with.

We had a lot of fun.

Theres more gold in that seam for us to mine, so Im excited about that.

I dont wanna get my hopes up too much because I never know.

I have no idea what Erics gonna do, and every time, Im wrong.

Eric Kripke’s ‘The Boys’ has some of the most jaw-dropping, stomach-churning scenes in recent TV history.
